Embroidery techniques explained

What is embroidery?

Embroidery is the art of decorating fabric using a needle and thread. Different stitches, threads, colours and textures can be combined to create patterns, pictures and decorative details. Hand embroidery can be as simple or intricate as you choose, making it suitable for complete beginners as well as experienced stitchers.

What is crewelwork?

Crewelwork is a form of surface embroidery traditionally worked with wool thread on linen twill. The design is usually drawn directly onto the fabric, allowing stitches to be placed freely rather than following a grid. A wide variety of stitches can be used to create flowing shapes, shading, raised details and rich texture. Crewelwork often features flowers, leaves, birds and animals.

Jacobean crewelwork is a traditional form of wool embroidery featuring flowing, nature-inspired designs worked with varied stitches on linen.

What is blackwork?

Blackwork is a counted-thread technique worked on an evenly woven fabric. Stitches follow the fabric’s grid to create repeating geometric patterns. Different pattern densities can produce areas of light and shade, giving the design depth. Traditional blackwork uses black thread on a pale fabric, although contemporary designs may include other colours.

An example of Canvas work Embroidery

What is canvas work?

Canvas work is stitched onto an open canvas with a clearly visible grid. The holes guide the placement of each stitch, and the canvas is often completely covered by the finished design. Different threads and decorative stitches can be combined to create bold patterns, pictures and highly textured surfaces.

What is cross stitch?

Cross stitch is also a counted-thread technique, but it is primarily built from small X-shaped stitches. It is usually worked from a chart on Aida or another evenly woven fabric. Each square on the chart represents a stitch, making it easy to see how the design develops. Cross stitch can be used for anything from simple motifs and lettering to detailed pictures.

What is the difference between crewelwork, blackwork and canvas work?

Although all four techniques involve decorating fabric with a needle and thread, they differ in the materials used, the way stitches are positioned and the finished effect.

In simple terms, crewelwork offers the greatest freedom in the placement and variety of stitches. Blackwork focuses on repeating geometric patterns and tonal effects. Canvas work uses a strong grid and often covers the whole canvas, while cross stitch builds designs from regular X-shaped stitches.

Which embroidery technique is best for beginners?

There is no single best technique for every beginner. The right starting point depends on whether the stitcher prefers following a chart, working with repeating patterns or experimenting more freely with colour and texture.

  • Cross stitch is a good choice for anyone who enjoys clear instructions and working methodically from a chart. The basic stitch is straightforward to learn, although larger designs require patience and careful counting.
  • Canvas work provides a visible grid that makes stitch placement easy to follow. It is well suited to beginners who want a structured project while also experimenting with different threads and decorative stitches.
  • Blackwork is ideal for those who enjoy precise, repeating patterns. Simple blackwork designs are accessible to beginners, while more advanced patterns offer opportunities to explore shading and intricate detail.
  • Crewelwork suits beginners who are drawn to flowing designs, wool threads and textured stitches. It introduces a wider variety of embroidery stitches and allows more freedom than counted-thread techniques.

For a highly structured first project, cross stitch or simple canvas work can provide an approachable starting point. Beginner blackwork and crewelwork projects are equally suitable when the design is kept manageable and the stitches are introduced gradually. The best choice is ultimately the technique whose appearance and process feel most enjoyable.

What is tapestry

Tapestry is a type of canvas work in which wool or tapestry thread is stitched across an open-weave canvas to create decorative patterns or detailed pictures. The stitches usually cover the canvas completely, producing a strong, richly textured piece of embroidery.
